museum review of
United Kingdom transport museum - London (London Transport Museum)
The London Transport Museum is without a doubt the best transport museum I have ever visited. While its not a typical railway museum, it offers a comprehensive overview of the entire public transport system of the city of London, and in that, it truly excels.
Upon entering, you start your journey through history by going all the way up to the top floor of the museum, either by lift or by stairs. There, the story begins in a time when London was still a collection of small villages in a marshland. From that point, you are taken on a journey through time, seeing how London grew larger and how the public transport system grew along with the city.
The museum fascinatingly showcases how public transport has functioned over the centuries. You get the chance to admire the oldest horse-drawn carriages, the first boats that carried people, and then the first buses and underground trains that ran through the ever-expanding city. The story the museum tells perfectly illustrates how public transport is intricately linked to the growth and development of London into the global city it is today.
