Latvian Railway History Museum – Latvijas dzelzceļa vēstures muzejs (Riga)

Location: Riga, Latvia
Rating:🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂☆☆☆☆☆

A short walk from the main railway station brings you to Latvia’s railway museum. It’s small, with a very modest indoor exhibition and a handful of nicely preserved locomotives and cars outside. There’s also a charming model railway that’s fun to watch.

That said, the museum feels dated and not particularly inspired. Labels are mostly (or entirely) in Latvian, so unless you’ve brushed up on the language you won’t get much context from the signage. Worth a quick look if you’re nearby and love trains, but don’t expect a deep dive into history. With the last Soviet era trains taken out of service the coming years and Rail baltica fundamentally changeing the future of Latvain rail, I little more love for the history would be nice.

Five locomotives.
